We were so glad that the babies waited a couple of days before making their arrival. I was actually admitted to the hospital on December 6th and fought off their delivery for a couple of days. By the early morning of December 9th the shots to stop the contractions and iv fluid had taken their toll on my body. During the night I was having difficulty breathing and half my body was swollen. I was put on oxygen and rushed off for a CT scan, ultrasound, and chest x-ray to look for clots or fluid. A couple hours after the results came back the doctor decided that we would deliver that day. By delivering, the doctors were then able to work on getting the fluid out of my system. I was disappointed that I couldn't hold the babies in any longer and a little scared at the same time.
We were scheduled to deliver at 2 pm. The nurses were in my room getting me ready and getting Mike and my mom geared up in scrubs. There ended up being an emergency c-section and we had to wait until 3 pm when they finished. That was a long hour for all of us. When 3 pm came around I found myself getting excited again. Not only would we meet our babies, but I would be getting closer to breathing on my own again!
I will never forget the atmosphere in the delivery room. There were at least 20 people involved. It felt more like a celebration then anything. The anesthesiologist was wonderful. He made us laugh and best of all I didn't even feel the epidural. One by one the babies came out and were lifted over the curtain...Brooke (Baby A), Sara (Baby B), and Luke (Baby C). Mike was able to follow each baby as they rushed them out of the room and my mom was able to stay by my side.
After being in recovery for what seemed like forever, my bed was wheeled into the nicu so that I could officially meet all of our babies. Wow! I was so happy to hear that ALL of them were on breathing room air. This is a huge deal when having triplets because they are so premature that their lungs often don't develop before delivery. I couldn't believe how beautiful they were and although they were tiny, they were bigger than I thought they would be. I was able to stay in the nicu only to briefly hold each one and then was taken back to my room. Luckily, I already knew that it would be this way because if I hadn't it would have been even harder to leave them until the next day. I was just thankful that Mike, my parents, my brother, Mike's dad and fiance, and Mike's mom and husband were there to welcome our triplets into this world.
