Okay, so I really need to start blogging more. It is getting to the point where everyone is waiting for updates. Can you believe that I am 29 weeks and 5 days? Well, if you saw me rolling out of bed and waddling then I'm sure you would, lol. So what has been going on with the Suttons...
Last Thursday (Nov 5th) we had our ultrasound appointment. The doctor was very pleased with my progress and the growth of the babies. Baby A (Brooke) weighed 2lb 11oz, Baby B (Sara) weighed 2lb 13 oz, and Baby C (Luke) weighed 3 lbs! They were all above the average weight for a singlton baby at 28 1/2 weeks. I asked the doctor if they would be scheduling my c-section or how that would work. She told me that they want to see how close to 37 weeks I can get. What does that mean? At this point I will be having numerous doctors appointments to monitor me and the babies. If things start to change (i.e. babies stop growing, high blood pressure, or any of the other risk factors that come with having more than 2 babies) then they will re-evaluate things.
This week I had a 3 hour glucose screening (didn't pass the 1 hour) to check for gestational diabetes. It was torture because I was sitting at the lab for about 4 hours and I had to fast. They drew my blood four times and by the time I left I could barely walk from sitting in the hard chair in the waiting room. My body can't take sitting for very long! On Wednesday I got the dreaded news that 2 of my values were high and that means that they consider me to have gestational diabetes. The nurse reassured me that is very common in high order multiples and now I will be meeting with a nurse, nutritionist, and stress counselor next Tuesday. At first I thought it was my fault and was beating myself up for eating all that chocolate (my sweet tooth has been even worse with pregnancy, if that is at all possible). Then I learned that during pregnancy the placenta makes hormones that make it harder for insulin to work. So it makes sense that the odds of having gestational diabetes is pretty high when you have 3 placentas! Luckily, the diabetes will go away after delivery. It will be interesting to find out next week what my new diet will be.
Yesterday was my birthday...the big 30! There seems to be a theme with 3 this year. I never would have imagined myself lying in bed growing a bunch of babies for my 30th birthday, but I have to say that I couldn't be happier. My parents came over and we had pizza and a cake that Mike baked for me (he does this every year, I am so lucky). Leanne also stopped by and it was wonderful to see her. I was spoiled with gifts. Mike got me a new digital camera which we will be getting a lot of use out of soon. My parents and Leanne both knew exactly what I needed: pajamas, jogging suits for after the babies are born, slippers, lotions, etc.
I want to thank my mom for coming over a couple of times a week to get the nursery and house organized. Also, she has been bringing over some dinners and doing dishes. Mike really appreciates this. He hates doing dishes. I don't know how she is finding time to do all that she is but I really hope her super mom skills rub off on me. I want to thank Mike too. He takes very good care of me. He doesn't complain about doing all the cooking or when I ask him to clean. He is there for all of my doctors appoinments and still thinks I'm beautiful while I'm on bedrest in pajamas with my hair sticking up and not a trace of make-up.
I will have another update next week. We have several appointments. All of our appointments are in Sacramento and Mike has to take off a lot of work, but we are getting excellent care through Sutter which makes it all worth it.
